A Note From Jim

From Insurmountable Odds to Brighter Futures Full of Hope. Thank You!

Throughout the world, in some of the neediest and most challenging situations, the Christian Brothers and their Lasallian Partners work together to transform seemingly impossible situations into places of hope and opportunity. The La Salle International Foundation could not be prouder to partner with those in these challenging situations and our donors to make such a profound difference. Thank you for your partnership with us.

I am reminded of one of my favorite movies, The Field of Dreams, as I go about this work of nurturing caring and supportive partnerships. Not that baseball cannot be a metaphor for life, as some may say. Instead, it is a favorite move for the three voices that Kevin Costner’s character hears and are his guides throughout the movie. It speaks to our partnerships and our reaching out with what we can to those places in our Lasallian world where we are needed to make a unique and transformative difference.

The first time he hears a voice, he says, “If you build it, they will come.” From doing the work to provide clean water, to building classrooms and student residences, to delivering solar power so there can be electricity, many of our projects help make the spaces and infrastructure needed to be safe, healthy, and cared for so learning and growing can occur. In many areas, so many students and young people are in need.

But the voice does not stop there. The second time it is heard, it challenges Costner’s character to “ease their pain.” Providing child safety and protection in some very dark corners of the world, making it possible to have clean water and learning to grow food that does more to make you healthy than sick, comforting and providing for refugee children and families in now foreign places, or those whose lives have been upended by natural disasters. All possible and part of the work we do together.

Finally, the most significant challenge is “Go the Distance.” Not part of the way, not just the easy way or the distance that keeps us in our comfort zone, but for the long haul, for the challenging needs in the difficult places. Where we must roll up our sleeves and remain focused and dedicated to each other and our cause sometimes even for an extended period; we must remind ourselves that as we look into the eyes of that father, mother, or child in that place where we are sharing what we can and offering something that will transform their lives, God is present in them, and so whatever we do for these…

The movie ends by showing us an endless snaking line of headlights on cars heading toward a baseball field built against all logic and odds in the middle of a cornfield in Iowa. The lights, the enduring hope, we can bring to our Lasallian world in need is through our special partnership. Thank you for caring alongside so many others.
