Fratelli Maicao – Changing Lives
Published on May 13th
In the border region of Maicao, Colombia, the intersection of migration, poverty, and limited access to basic services has created a deeply challenging environment for thousands of families. Venezuelan migrants, returning Colombian citizens, and Wayuu Indigenous communities all face the daily realities of displacement, economic hardship, and social exclusion. For many children and young people in this context, consistent access to education, nutrition, and safe spaces remains uncertain. Fratelli Project in Maicao addresses the multiple dimensions of poverty and exclusion, aiming to rebuild both individual lives and the community as a whole.
How Donations Support Education, Nutrition, and Opportunity
Thanks to $50,000 from the Raskob Foundation, the Fratelli Project strengthened its core programs and responded to urgent needs. One of the most critical areas addressed through this funding was child nutrition. Through this support, the project was able to provide two nutritious meals per day to all participating children, creating the conditions necessary for consistent attendance and active participation in educational activities

Additionally, the funding enabled improvements to learning environments and expanded access to quality education. The acquisition of laptops introduced students to essential digital tools, enabling them to develop skills in communication, research, and academic presentation. These resources became central not only to classroom instruction but also to after-school tutoring sessions, helping bridge learning gaps and increase student motivation. At the same time, the provision of school supplies, books, and pedagogical materials ensured that children could fully participate in their educational processes, regardless of their families’ economic situation.

In addition, leadership and entrepreneurship programs equip young people and adults with practical skills to generate income and actively contribute to their communities. Watch a testimonial video from Alexandra Victoria Añéz below.
Strengthening Communities Through Holistic Education Programs
The project’s reach also includes broader community engagement. Work carried out across multiple settlements, along with a census of 437 families, has provided valuable insight into the living conditions and needs of the population, enabling more targeted and effective interventions. By engaging families and community leaders, the project strengthens social cohesion and helps build a foundation for long-term resilience.
