Kenya: Christ the Teacher Institute for Education
Christ the Teacher Institute for Education (CTIE) has been the historic name for what is now called the School of Education at Tangaza University, located in the Karen neighborhood of Nairobi, Kenya.
CTIE began with 13 students in 1993 and has grown to include upward of 600 students in recent years. Many of the students are women and men who come from the informal settlements of Kenya. Despite limited financial resources and (often) even with underqualified teachers in their local schools, these students have achieved a C+ (or higher) on the rigorous, three-week long national exam in their 12th grade.
These students from the informal settlements continue to be able to attend the School of Education because of the generosity of donors who have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years to assist with tuition, but also with the basic necessities of life. We call these donors Friends of CTIE.
And because of Friends of CTIE, there is a palpable transformation going on in Kenya – and beyond.
